We seek to think outside the box, and for many that box is a bland builder's beige. So if you're the type more likely to hit the paint store than the gym come the new year, I've got a wonderful guest post to share with you with lots of (perhaps unlikely) inspiration. Enjoy!

Pink is one of those colors many women embrace and many men feel alienated by. In interiors, those opposing perspectives can be merged into a happy collaboration by using a light touch to keep the pink hues as gender-neutral as possible. To achieve this, darker furnishings can be included with pink for a more masculine feel or the color can be added in tiny touches such as throw pillows. Take a look at some of the pink-infused rooms we found and get inspired. Would you and your significant other feel comfortable in these spaces?

A traditional living room looks stately without seeming fussy by using the lightest pink on furnishings and at the bookshelves.

The soft pink walls and light gray and white flooring of this living room balance the bold furnishings beautifully.

Dark chocolate and black furnishings give a masculine feel to this pink and white living room. A sisal rug brings a casual touch to the space.

A single throw and several small floral arrangements give this sunroom just the right amount of pink.

A very masculine space gets a feminine touch from a few pink throw pillows. Doesn't this room inspire lots of living room ideas?

A blue Chinoiserie room gets a blast of pink from its dining chairs. It would be nice if the room had another bit of pink somewhere in the room to anchor the color.

A statement chair introduces pink into a bright white room. Sometimes just one touch of a vibrant color such as this is all the room needs.

Still in too much of a food coma/hangover state to compile your own list of non-judgemental, non-self-deprecating New Year's resolutions? Then just steal these via Apartment Therapy

First off (if you're still here after my prolonged absence), Happy New Year!! May this year be better than the last and worse than the next (and hopefully apocalypse-free)! I hope you all had wonderful holidays surrounded by loved ones and guilt-free gluttony! My holidays were low-key and exactly what I needed. I spent time with beloved family and friends, gorged myself on wonderful food and played way, way too many wii and Kinect dance games... a sobering reminder of just how out of shape I am. Oh well, that's what resolutions are for, isn't it?

A blonder 2012. It remains to be seen how much of 2012 will be spent with the tree still up.

New Years Eve the boyfriend and I ended up staying in. But that's no excuse not to get all dolled up anyway, is it? Unfortunately for my poor little blog we were too busy having an awesome time throwing back the pink bubbly stuff and whipping up this sumptuous mushroom bourguinon to do the outfit photo thing. Taking more time to do that definitely warrants a spot on the ever-growing resolution list. So the only photo I have is of the cheesy self-portrait variety but it allows me to show you my new slightly blonder do. And I had to Polyvore my outfit due to lack of photographic evidence (only the shoes are different, but a reasonable facsimilie scored at last years' post-Christmas sale at Browns). And I've been trying to avoid this years post-Christmas sales like the plague. Money is tight and temptation is everywhere! I did cave when I found the black J Brand velvet skinnies above for 99$. I'm only human! So let's tack "spend less" onto the now scroll-like resolution list, shall we?

Brunch Success/Blogging Fail

Above image of spinach and cheese strata via Smitten Kitchen, as the one whipped up by me was simply too delectable to allow even a spare moment to capture photographically. Seriously. Make this. It is soooo good.

So I know I promised you all photos of my holiday brunch last weekend. But despite my doing most of the prep work the day before, I ended up being so busy that I didn't take one photo, and it didn't even occur to me to hand the camera over to anyone else to capture the magic. Poo. Although I suppose that means I was simply enjoying myself too much being completely present in the moment to care... which is good for me as a human being, but not so good as a blogger. Oh well.

So that means no photos of the mimosas galore, the mountain of Fairmount bagels and buttery croissants from Mamie Clafoutis, or my friend Eric's fluffy, decadent homemade eggnog that managed to convert even me despite my three decades as a staunch anti-eggnogger, no evidence of my ill-timed duck fat potatoes which failed to crisp up as intended, no sign of the to-die-for spinach and cheese strata that turned out as scrumptious as I'd hoped, and no pics of my gorgeous friends who managed to look stunning even on a Sunday morning or of my Mom joining in the fun. And no shots of my make-out session with the dishwasher post-party. Whatever would I do without it? The good news is, I'm dying to do it all over again. Maybe next time I'll even delegate the documentation duties.

Sorry for the absence, work has been insane lately. On a happier note I'm in full-on pre-holiday mode (complete with never ending cold I've been trying to fight with sheer denial). I spent yesterday evening baking up a storm with my mamma. We made the most incredible cookies: Crispy Salted Oatmeal White Chocolate Cookies. Whaaaat? Smitten Kitchen, what would I do without you? Tomorrow I'll be hosting a brunch for my closest friends, I've been prepping all day, I absolutely can't wait. I'll share all the goodies with you next week... but for now, here's a little sneak preview: a peek at my white tree and oh, those cookies, it took every ounce of willpower I had to keep the lid on that cookie tin all day. Okay, I snuck one.

Even though in Canada Thanksgiving comes around waaay back in October, I've always found American Thanksgiving kind of kick-starts the holiday season for me, it's my ready-set-go to begin my holiday shopping… and decorating! So in that spirit, here's a fantastic guest post chock full of inspiration to deck your halls and yada yada. Enjoy!

Hi everyone! I'm Jessica from Arcadian Lighting, a blog and website all about the latest in interior design trends and a wide selection of lighting fixtures to go with them. The holiday season is upon us and one of the best ways to get into the spirit is by decorating your home to reflect your festive mood. But holiday decorations don't have to be identical. I've compiled eight examples of unconventional, modern interior designs for the holiday. Enjoy!

The tiger striped chairs in this dining room may not be what immediately comes to mind when you think of the holidays, but it adds an unexpected and fun twist. Garlands hung with sparkling lights on the mantle, and miniature Christmas trees at each place setting bring in traditional holiday accents.

An all white dining room is the perfect canvas for pops of sparkly, vibrant holiday decorations. The chandelier makes an even more glamorous statement when dressed up in beads and ornaments in a cool color palette.

This sparse, contemporary living room gets festive in an eclectic way. The lush wreath and garland-wrapped-antler are rustic, natural touches that contrast well with the abstract Christmas tree style decoration.

Using white as the dominate color, this living room showcases traditional red and green holiday colors, while still feeling very modern. The paper snowflakes and tree patterned wallpaper are playful touches.

Dazzling gold ornaments and table decorations make this dining room glamorous and modern. Black furniture and drum pendant lights with glitzy crystal beads are beautiful and stylish accents.

A comfy bed decked out in red and white with snowflake details is perfect for the holiday season. The thick knitted blanket and pillow are cozy touches, and the garland and red reindeer overhead are adorable, as well.

This bedroom takes its inspiration from the season's snowy landscape. DIY snowflakes are a fun addition to the wrought iron bed frame. The neutral palette is fresh and bright thanks to pale blue accents, and the chocolate brown wall sconce complements the color scheme beautifully.

A roaring fire in the fireplace, a candle-lit mantle and a twinkling Christmas tree all create an idyllic holiday scene. A big comfy chair and fluffy throw complete this warm, elegant living room.

Hello, lovelies! This is Jennifer Fabulous, Liv's blogger soulmate. I am so honored she asked me to guest post on her awesome blog. I'm hoping a little bit of her coolness will rub off on me now. Hehe.

Liv recently got me hooked on Party Girl, a fashion explosion I somehow missed out on during my youth in the 1990s.

The 1995 film revolves around Mary (played by the delectable Parker Posey), a 24-year-old Prada-adorned bohemian who has no idea what she wants to do with her life. While she tries to figure it out, she spends her time changing in and out of designer clothes, eating delicious Middle Eastern food, and hanging out with her fabulous gay friends.

In other words, this film is about me.

I'm going to be honest, I could have cared less about the plot, no matter how hard it hit home.

It was the fashion which made me drool.

The gaudy, spectacular, glamboyant fashion.

Let's take a looksie, shall we?

Anyway.

I knew the film was going to be fucking brilliant when Parker Posey made her entrance in GLITTER SHORTS.

(Insert hyperventilating here).

In this next scene, color-blocking on acid takes place.

I would dance on tables too, if I rocked this outfit.

The next ensemble is my all-time favorite:

Fake leo. Check. Red lips. Check. Fuck-you walk. Check.

And finally, class at it's finest.

Because nothing says lady-like career-woman more than a form-fitting leather skirt and a gorgeous satin ruffled blouse.

Jumping the Gun on Holiday Fun!

So... here I am at home, still fighting the evil cold monster, and what else is there to do but get an early start on my holiday shopping (online, of course)? Any mention of Christmas prior to Halloween always irks me to no end but once Halloween has passed I immediately switch to Christmas holiday mode. (This might have something to do with the fact that, as a Canadian, Thanksgiving precedes Halloween for us). So my first holiday post of the season is all about the party-wear, showing you 10 ways to incorporate red, green, gold, sequins, velvet, hell, even antlers into your holiday party look without looking like a Christmas cliché!

Today's definitely going to be a nice lazy Sunday chock full of guilt-free snacking and scary movies. After hitting up a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show Friday night and going out again last night in full-on 80s cartoon glory I'm definitely ready to get vegetative.

If you're as geriatric as I am or simply an 80s maniac you should know who this is. It's Jem, from Jem and the Holograms! I even found some truly outrageous red rhinestone star earrings as a kiosk in the metro. A huge thank you to my amazing friend Nadia and my incredible Mom for whipping up this costume for me.

I've been wanting to decorate my apartment for Halloween, which is my absolute favorite holiday, mostly for myself, seeing as I've been reluctant to have people over because I don't feel my apartment is quite finished enough. I seriously need to get over that. I just wanted to have a few glam-macabre touches here and there. I found a bag of magenta glitter skulls at winners yesterday but I was hungry and the line-up at the cash was gargantuan so I left them behind. Hopefully they're still waiting for me. The ravens have unfortunately all left the Dollar Store but there are some glitter spiders there I may fill a tall vase with. Better late than never! Since today is so rainy and dreary I thought I'd share a few shots of the incredibly gorgeous Thanksgiving weekend we had. Beautiful multicoloured leaves, perpetual sunshine and unbelievably warm weather. Last Saturday afternoon the boyfriend and I randomly selected north as our direction of choice and took a long drive towards the Laurentians, ending with an impromptu drop-in on my sister's lovely home, nestled in the woods with their own private little lake (pond?). Beers + rowboat + people I love = Perfection.

Mmm.... October... this means only one thing: I can dial my Halloween obsession up to 11. Especially since I did virtually nothing last year aside from watch lots of old-school horror flicks. Actually I think some of my friends still haven't completely forgiven me for exposing them to Sleepaway Camp. But digress.

Costumes: at first I was thinking Dexter victim. Then I went to the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit and fell back in love with the flight attendant costumes from The Fifth Element. Then I started wondering if I could do a realistic Kat Von D. But now I kinda just wanna go back to my roots and be Jem. (And yes, the Misfits were better but I've been there, done that. Twice. What can I say? I'm an 80s girl through and through).

Had a little impromptu date night with my favorite rock chick Mel last night. With a couple of bottles of rosé in hand we hit up Mozza in the Gay Village.

When your bestie describes the cuisine as "porn food" you're walking in with high expectations. Bonus awesomeness points right off the bat for being a BYOW, having a disco party bathroom and the adorable waiter asking if we'd like our dishes with extra love. Aaaawwww.... Everything on the menu is offered as a table d'hôte so you better believe you're rolling out of there at the end of the night. It was actually my second time at Mozza, the first time around a certain dish caught my eye but I ended up going in another direction. This time, however, I was tackling the linguine with oka and dark chocolate. Also joining the chocolatey cheese party were jumbo shrimps, cherry tomatoes, walnuts and brandy.

The result: evil genius.

Four courses, two bottles of wine and nearly four hours of increasingly incoherent babbling later we eventually stumbled out of there, too full to breathe and too happy to care...

More sneak peeks of the upcoming Versace/H&M collab have surfaced, this time in Vogue Russia. While I ~~never~~ rarely brave the crowds I do usually swing by H&M post-mayhem to see if the leftovers/returns tickle my fancy. While not ecstatic, I'm a little intrigued by what the collection has to offer, particularly the gold jewelry and the bright little mini shift dresses. But most of all I just want Abbey Lee's hair. I don't work in the best neighborhood. Truth be told I've had to side-step syringes littering the street on more than one occasion. That's what makes finding an oasis like De farine et d'eau fraîche so incredibly wonderful. If I walk up Amherst street about a block or so, there nestled among the vintage furniture shops (also definitely worth a look) is the most adorable little jewel of a bakery that feels like my own personal little slice of heaven whenever I go there. (And nary a crackhead to be found).

Lunch! Half a grilled cheese sandwich and broccoli soup.

Topped off with a delicious organic latte for the road.

I've tried most of the sandwiches: the grilled steak, pear and gorgonzola panini is also a must try.

The homemade caramels are absolutely delicious, my favorites so far are

the fleur de sel and chocolate chipotle.

The gorgeous little cakes start at 60$ a pop but one look at how exquisitely crafted they are almost makes it seem like a bargain. I don't know if I'd have the heart to slice into one though.

I am head over heels in love with the fresh, whimsical design of this enchanting little bakery.

The design was done by Montreal-based Surface 3.

Next stop: Wonderland.

First off, let's get something straight: I am not a DIYer. Unless you count adding truffle oil to my microwave popcorn (I'm fancy like that) or assembling (not hacking) anything and everything from Ikea. The arrival of fall, however, leaves me wanting to make over my space as much as my wardrobe. But my budget? Minimal at best. Maybe I'll try one or more of these… perhaps a hybrid of #2 and #5? And I'm absolutely d y i n g over that fire pit, perfect for the little balcony just off my living room, provided I don't inadvertently set it on fire. Let me know if you try any of these.

I just finished watching this weeks' episode of The Rachel Zoe Project and would have much prefered to spend less time with Kim Kardashian and her texting addiction and more time shopping in that super fun furniture store with Jeremiah. I just about dropped the jar of Nutella (don't judge me) when I saw that blue velvet tufted sofa. If wanting a living room that looks like an "80s porn set" is wrong, then I don't wanna be right. It's interesting how for most of us black is our sartorial security blanket, the no-brainer go-to options in our closet that never steer us wrong when in doubt. And yet we tend to shy away from the colour in our homes. What's considered playing it safe when it comes to our wardrobes is regarded as this huge risk when it comes to interiors.

Well I'm over it. There are so many inspiring images of gorgeous black rooms floating around that the whole idea that black will make your room look small and depressing is less than convincing. And while my apartment is tiny it's full of light. I'll start small. One living room wall and the wall behind my bed. Stay tuned...

How Can It Be Wrong When It Feels So White?

Part of the reason for my prolonged absence has been a move into yet another apartment. An apartment awash in various hideous shades of canteloupe and blue. Yum. In order to wipe that horror from my mind I chose to paint the entire apartment white. I figured all those gorgeous white rooms filling my inspiration folders couldn't be wrong. But it's so... white! It's a small space but it's bathed in light for most of the day. I think it can handle the boldness of a black wall or two. I'm thinking of painting the wall in the living room behind the TV and hanging my gold sunburst mirror there. If it works it will look rich and velvety and hopefully like the wall is receeding. If it doesn't the room will look half its' already miniscule size. What do you think? An invitation to claustrophobia or a much needed touch of sexy badassery?

*Please note that this room is a total work in progress: those coffee tables are temporary until I can afford a lucite or glass replacement. Rug pending. I also desperately need some kind of additional seating. Suggestions?

As a not-quite-newbie but not-wildly-successful blogger, I've been pondering the importance of having business cards. Something to hand to people rather than scrawling your url on a post-it or napkin, as well as eliminating another excuse for neglecting to properly promote my little pet project. I've also been considering employing this criminally underused Nikon of mine to snap some photos of the amazing style I see on these Montreal streets, particularly as the weather improves. I can't tell you how many times I've seen some impeccable creature stroll by and kicked myself for not having my camera. But even if I did, I'd need to approach them, and I think having some sort of calling card would certainly de-creepify and legitimize me to a certain extent.

I recently noticed a few bloggers, like the lovely ladies above, using Moo MiniCards, with a variety of outfit posts on one side and their contact info on the other. These cards are adorable, and probably crazy useful at conferences and meetups when there so many faces and so many names I'm sure it's like playing one big bloggy game of Memory. I wouldn't know though, as I have yet to do the meet-up or conference thing myself (except for PodCamp in 2009, when my blog was just a baby and I spoke to no one). Fingers crossed for the next IFB Conference!

But what if, like me, you're not such a prolific outfit poster? Or if, like me, you feel a little odd handing out cards with photos of yourself on them to virtual strangers? What image goes on your card? Your header? What if, like me, your header is a stolen (yet credited!) image you don't own?

Last night, my wonderful boyfriend took me to a late supper at the to-die-for Club Chasse et Peche (first posted about here). Un-be-lie-va-ble. These photos were snapped in a hurry but I wanted to show you this lovely blouse I picked up months ago but never posted, and this F21 pleather miniskirt that at about 18$ makes the cost per wear a joke, I've been wearing it out a lot. Well, when I'm not in hibernation mode that is.

My Kinda Country

I am the kinda girl who judges a book by it's cover. Usually it saves me a lot of time but sometimes I end up missing out on some awesomeness. Like this:

These images are from, believe it or not, Country Living magazine, something I would have never picked up on the newsstand based on the name alone. Had it not been mentioned on Corks + Caftans, this droolworthy space could have passed me by and I'd have that much less daydream fuel. The space belongs to Euro Trash designer Lizzie Carney, now my hero for the day for turning her basement into a dining room/wine cellar (love!), fulfilling one of my frequent fantasies of turning the second bedroom into a walk-in closet and owning one of the most seriously adorable refrigerators I've ever seen. If this is country I don't wanna be rock n' roll!

Blogger Lovin: The Bright Side

Around this time of year, every year, I tend to go a little batshit, as I think most of those who live in the Winteriest climates do. Saturday night's random snowstorm left me thoroughly unimpressed, I even ditched my night out in favor of hibernating with my man and some Indian take-out. (I feel terrible and will make it up to the ditched party this week). Anyway, despite my pledge of shopping abstinence I'm dying to trade in my murky winter palette and bulky layers of all things light and bright, I think even just adding a brightly coloured scarf or bag and piling on some more jewelry to my usual uninspired winter uniform may help elevate my mood as I bide my time till the thaw...

Hair (Not-So) Apparent

So, Stephanie, I guess you weren't the last to see me as a brunette after all! On the plus side, my hair is soft, shiny and smells great. But it ain't blonde. My beloved hair guru, a fan of natural-looking hair, was concerned that my fragile locks wouldn't be able to handle a total colour-stripping process, so it'll have to be a more gradual transformation. Boyfriend's reaction: "You look almost the same! ... But it looks good!". Nice save. The result ended up being more of a subtle ombre look (really hard to see here, and please excuse the hood hair), which should lighten up over several shampoos. If it doesn't I'll go back to the salon and see what can be done to blondify me a little more. So for now I don't get to wow you with a drastic change. I also don't get to wow you with decent pics, as I'm looking back at these the colour looks brassy and orangish, which it isn't at all, the blonde is more beige than gold. I'll try to take some pics in natural light sometime soon.

Yay goodies in the mail! The other day I braved a blizzard and made my way to my less-than-conviently located post office to retrieve this gorgeous necklace I won from a giveaway on Bon Bon Rose Girls! It was worth the meteorological trauma to score this piece, with all its beading and embroidery and dangly, sparkly chains, it'll dress up just about anything. A huge, huge thank you to Megan and Kristin who all but spoiled their loyal readers rotten over the holidays with fantastic giveaways, and to Erin Davis from Stella & Dot, a total sweetheart. Aaahhh Zara, my love for you remains solid as a rock. I apologize for avoiding you lately but I'm saving up for a vacation and turning these brown (ahem, intermittently grey) locks blonde will surely cost a pretty penny. And my poor half melted Visa card hasn't yet recovered from all that holiday spending. So you see, it's only because I love you so that I had to let you go...
I don't know how long I'll be able to stay away though: here's a little peek at some goodies from the Spring lookbook. Loving the nude leather skirt, the pops of color and the general pared-back 70s vibe. And that crochet thing that's really hoping is a dress. Kind of awesome for throwing over a swimsuit, no?

Great Site, Shame About the Name...

Verb: Yearn to possess or have (something).

Oh, the irony. A couple of posts ago, I sang the praises of a new website, The Coveted, giving us a glimpse into the enviable closets of fashion insiders. And at the time, it vaguely clicked that "The Coveted" did already exist out there, I made a mildly perplexed face (which kind of looks a lot like my regular face), shrugged and went about my business. I've been so completely absorbed in my little bubble lately that I missed the implications of this completely. The other The Coveted, the original, in fact, is the personal blog of Jennine Jacob, founder of blogger community Independent Fashion Bloggers (of which I am a member), and has been around since 2007. As Jennine says in her most recent post, "Privately, I was devastated. Angry. Disheartened. Deflated. The only thing that kept me from losing it was the outcry from my fellow bloggers." So enpowered by her support system, she sought legal counsel. Next came a flurry of cease-and-desist letters back and forth between the two Coveteds, culminating in the newer site not only strongly recommending that she no longer discuss the matter but that the rest of us hush up as well. And the blogger community exploded.

I honestly don't know what to think, while I appreciate and genuinely really like the concept of the new site (I wouldn't have posted it if I didn't), Jennine has done so much to unite and support the blogger community and to think of all the hard work she's done building her brand going down the tubes and how all this must feel is seriously disheartening. What do you think? I have trouble believing that the new site was unaware of the original site's existance as a simple Google search reveals it to be the first result and it's really a shame, as the concept is so solid. Which of the two should bite the bullet and re-brand?

Carrie's right (check out her comment on my last post): Why try to fight winter? Just make a break for it. And so these days ewhat's been keeping me (somewhat) sane is shopping around for Caribbean cruises. While I can't take off right away, the promise of turquoise waters and hot hot heat in just a short couple of months are enough to keep me going. I've never been on a cruise, and I never really saw myself as a cruise person, but after asking around and getting all researchy, it looks crazy fun: island-hopping days and uber-dressy nights? Yes please! I'll let you know what we decide on, for now, let's keep the tropical glam vibe alive with exactly the kind of editorial my tired, snow-blind eyes need to be enjoying.

The Plight of the Canadian Party Girl

Ordinarily sub-zero temperatures and city streets hidden under gobs of formerly white snow and a slush swamp reminiscent of the Bog of Eternal Stench don't inspire me to spend my nights shivering, lining up outside of clubs while salt eats away at very inappropriate footwear. I'll be blissfully happy to stay in with my man and my shoes, where we'll all be safe and warm. Unfortunately, all those inconsiderate parents procreating in the spring roughly three decades ago have resulted in a slew of birthday parties for the next few weekends. My parents were awesome, they brought you all the gift of me in the balmy month of July, not only facilitaing your sartorial choices for those outings that celebrate my existance but also giving you all a more than adequate 6 month recovery period from your crippling holiday shopping debts. Thank you Mom and Dad!

But seriously... how the hell do you all get dressed up in the winter? Do you eschew the chic in favor of the practical or does style conquer all (even the weather). Do you have a go-to party outfit formula you rely on? Dear readers, I implore you: help me look good so my beloved friends have something pretty to look at on their special day!
