Valley of the Dolls... and a winner!

I don't know what took me so long but I recently Netflixed this campy, candy-coloured, Elnett-scented, pill-popping gem of a film and I loved it! Check out the trailer below.

Aaaaand... the winner of the 100$ Shopbop gift card chosen by random.org is Jen of Haute Whimsy! Sooo happy you won, Jen, let me know what you get!

Guest Post: Party Girl Fashion

Hello, lovelies! This is Jennifer Fabulous, Liv's blogger soulmate. I am so honored she asked me to guest post on her awesome blog. I'm hoping a little bit of her coolness will rub off on me now. Hehe.

Liv recently got me hooked on Party Girl, a fashion explosion I somehow missed out on during my youth in the 1990s.

The 1995 film revolves around Mary (played by the delectable Parker Posey), a 24-year-old Prada-adorned bohemian who has no idea what she wants to do with her life. While she tries to figure it out, she spends her time changing in and out of designer clothes, eating delicious Middle Eastern food, and hanging out with her fabulous gay friends.

In other words, this film is about me.

I'm going to be honest, I could have cared less about the plot, no matter how hard it hit home.

It was the fashion which made me drool.

The gaudy, spectacular, glamboyant fashion.

Let's take a looksie, shall we?

(I apologize in advance for the poor quality of the screenshots. We're dealing with pre-digital shit here).

Anyway.

I knew the film was going to be fucking brilliant when Parker Posey made her entrance in GLITTER SHORTS.

(Insert hyperventilating here).

In this next scene, color-blocking on acid takes place.

I would dance on tables too, if I rocked this outfit.

The next ensemble is my all-time favorite:

Fake leo. Check. Red lips. Check. Fuck-you walk. Check.

And finally, class at it's finest.

Because nothing says lady-like career-woman more than a form-fitting leather skirt and a gorgeous satin ruffled blouse.

And these are just a FEW of the looks from the movie. Imagine.

Below I've created some outfits inspired by the film.

He-he-hello-ooo!

Ah, Party Girl. I Netflixed this the other day because the beat up VHS copy I had flew up to the great Blockbuster in the sky... and I loved this film as much upon the 87th viewing as I did the very first time.

If you haven't seen this (for shame!) then you must ask yourself: Do I loves myself some Parker Posey? Do I have a deep appreciation for falafels with hot sauce, the Dewey Decimal System and 90s house music?  Do I truly feel in my heart of hearts I should have been born a drag queen? (Oh wait, is that just me?)

Regardless, for now, let's revel in Mary's style spectrum from lady-like to totally bonkers and everything in between:

Fortress of Solitude

After grabbing some brunch with my girls this morning I ducked in from the rain and settled back on the couch to re-watch Tom Ford's stunning, heartbreaking film A Single Man and fell in love all over again. Oh, that 60s style: those gorgeous interiors, the cars, the clothes, the make-up, Green Onions! As much as I loved the girly lavishness of Charley's home, I'm left drooling over George's mid-century California dream of a glass house. sigh...

Cigne of the Times

I just saw Darren Aronofsky's incredibly visceral, disturbingly beautiful Black Swan this afternoon. I hadn't been that excited to see a film in a long time and despite my high expectations (and my mild hangover) I was definitely not disappointed. How gorgeous are the posters? My walls are just screaming for one.

Eyes Without a Face (or, mask without a costume)

My posts at this time last year were chock full of inspirational Halloweeny editorials. This year I kind of dropped the ball a little, opting instead to cuddle on the couch with my man and whatever random scary-ish movie we encounter on our channel surfing adventures. (Although this evening I raided HMV and brought home Evil Dead II, Sleepaway Camp and both Hellraisers at six bucks a pop for our viewing pleasure. Yes, people still buy movies).

I also can't help but feel I've dropped the ball on the costume front as well. I'm usually all amped to transform myself into some pop culturey something or other, but this year, I got nothin'. At the boyfriend's suggestion (and after seeing all those awesome Vogue Paris Anniversary party photos), I opted to go the masquerade route, picking up an ornate, feathery black and gold mask, but I have no clue what to wear with it! Help!

Here are some of the aforementioned awesome Vogue Paris Masquerade photos, for your enjoyment, let's hope they contribute to my lightbulb moment:

What About Bob?

I have a hair appointment next week (finally!), but I'm not quite sure which way to go. I've reached some sort of follicular impasse. It's been short most of my life, and it's been long for the past couple of years. It's been blonde, it's been dark, it was both simultaneously in my Debbie Harry phase.  I'm not ready to lose the length so I'm thinking of opting for a collarbone grazing bob (with bangs), a slightly longer take on Michelle Pfeiffer's sexy Scarface do. Color-wise I'm a little torn: I'm loving Ashley Olsen's gleaming golden waves (but not the maintenance involved), Abbey Lee Kershaw's pre-platimum caramel hue, Olivia Palermo's sleek coffee coloured shade with just the subtlest hint of lightening at the ends and, always, Leigh Lezark's edgy raven angled bob. But which way to go?

Horror? I Don't Even Know Her!

Around this time of year, every year, I go a little mad with all things Halloweeny on the brain. Granted, I haven't been to a good Halloween party since my dearly missed former roommates and I stopped throwing them (*ahem! Pats self on back. And on butt a little too.*), but once October hits (okay, early September) I'm craving Halloweeny movies, scouring Google Image Search for costumes, even consulting Martha Stewart for ghoulish goodies I'll never make. And I become alarmingly angry when I see premature Christmas paraphernalia threatening to infringe upon my most beloved of holidays.
This year, thanks to many of my favorite people fleeing the country in recent years, our crew has whittled down to too few to throw a decent house party and I'd rather avoid the same old bar/club my friends frequent with disturbing consistency. So I was thinking maybe just a movie night, or, as a brilliant colleague just suggested to me, a rousing (inebriated) game of Zombies!!! (I adore zombies for some inexplicable reason and I had never heard of this game until this morning). She also recommended an early 80s Canadian horror flick called The Pit, which looks incredibly brilliant. (I have a huge soft spot for good bad movies, and have a lot of catching up to do since I only really summoned the courage to start watching horror films in my 20s. Yes, I am a huge wuss).
The images above are all from my current inspiration obsession, Dario Argento's 1977 film Suspiria, which I only discovered last year (I told you I was behind). Have you seen this film? It's insanely stylish and the score by Goblin is simply the creepiest, most perfect spooky music ever. Obsessed, I tell you!

Do you love Halloween too? Got any more must-sees for me? Bring it on! :-)

Dancer in the Dark

Have you all heard about this? Am I the last in the loop? Darren Aronofsky's upcoming thriller Black Swan, set to open this years' Venice Film Festival,  stars Natalie Portman as a ballerina taking on the lead in Swan Lake, it's Aronofsky, so lots of dark twistiness ensues. As if that didn't sound awesome enough, the ballet costumes are designed by Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. I can't wait for this.

And don't forget you have until Sunday to enter the Chains of Love Giveaway (click here)!

Cash and Carrie?

The trailer for the new Sex and the City movie is out. It looks okay, but something seems off somehow, like some of the heart so prevalent in the series is missing. I know I'll be lining up to see it anyway, I liked the first film. What do you think? Can't wait to see Carrie and Co. again or is SATC now just a cash cow that's already been milked for all it's worth? See the trailer here.
